“To create major change, you need 3 things:
Focus - a clear purpose & goals to guide your life,
Will - motivation & enthusiasm to sustain the actions,
Capabilities - skills to fulfil your purpose.
Start with focus. A powerful purpose provides willpower. Willpower inspires developing the needed skills. Your passion will attract others with complementary capabilities to join you on your mission.”

Change is a fundamental aspect of life. Whether it's a personal transformation, a career shift, or a significant life event, we all face moments where we must adapt and evolve.
However, bringing about lasting change can be a daunting task. It requires a combination of focus, motivation, and capabilities.
In this newsletter, we will explore the three essential elements necessary for creating major change and provide guidance on how to start your journey.
The Three Essential Elements
To bring about a fundamental change, three elements must exist simultaneously:
Focus: A clear sense of purpose in life and clear goals to guide your life's activities.
Will: The motivation and enthusiasm to introduce and sustain the actions.
Capabilities: The skills and abilities to fulfil your purpose and goals.
These elements are interconnected and interdependent. A strong focus provides the motivation and direction needed to drive change. The will to act on your goals is fuelled by your focus. Finally, the capabilities to achieve your goals are developed through your enthusiasm and persistence.
Starting with Focus
So, where do you begin? The right place to start is with your focus. A powerful focus provides the willpower needed to drive change. When your purpose is clear and deeply rooted, you will find the motivation to overcome obstacles and stay committed to your goals.
To develop a powerful focus, you must first understand your innermost purpose in life. This involves reflecting on your values, passions, and long-term aspirations. Ask yourself:
What drives me?
What am I passionate about?
What do I stand for?
Once you have a clear sense of your purpose, you can set specific, measurable, and achievable goals. These goals should align with your purpose and provide direction for your life's activities.
The Power of Will
With a clear focus, you now have the motivation and enthusiasm to introduce and sustain the actions necessary for change. Your willpower is fuelled by your purpose and drives you to take consistent action towards your goals.
To cultivate your willpower, you must:
Set clear goals and priorities
Break down large goals into smaller, manageable tasks
Create a schedule and stick to it
Celebrate small victories along the way
Developing Capabilities
As you focus on your goals and sustain your willpower, you will naturally develop the skills and abilities needed to achieve them. This may involve learning new skills, seeking guidance from others, or building a support network.
To accelerate your capabilities, you can:
Seek out mentors or coaches who can provide guidance and support
Join communities or groups related to your goals
Continuously learn and improve your skills
Warren Buffett's "2 List" Strategy for Focused Attention
Warren Buffett uses a simple 3-step strategy to help his employees prioritise their tasks and eliminate distractions. This method can be useful for making decisions and staying focused on what matters.
➶➶ The Strategy ➶➶
Write Down Your Goals: Start by writing down your top 25 career goals. This can include short-term goals, such as things you want to accomplish this week.
Identify Your Top Goals: Review your list and circle your top 5 goals. These are the most important tasks you need to focus on.
Create Two Lists: You now have two lists: List A (your top 5 goals) and List B (the remaining 20 goals).
Buffett's strategy is to focus on your top 5 goals and avoid all other tasks until you have achieved success with these goals. This means that everything on List B becomes your "Avoid-At-All-Cost" list.
➶➶ Ivy Lee Method ➶➶
The Ivy Lee Method was developed by Ivy Ledbetter Lee in the early 20th century. It was first implemented by Charles M. Schwab, the president of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, who saw significant improvements in his team's productivity.
The Ivy Lee Method can help you achieve peak productivity, reduce decision fatigue, and ensure that you always complete the most important tasks.
➶➶ The Strategy ➶➶
Write Down Your Tasks: At the end of each workday, write down the six most important tasks you need to accomplish the next day. Prioritise them ruthlessly, focusing on true importance.
Focus on One Task at a Time: Start the next day by tackling the first task on your list. Give it your full focus until it's complete. Then, and only then, move on to the second task. Repeat this process throughout the day.
No Multitasking: Avoid multitasking and distractions. Stay focused on the task at hand until it's complete.
Rinse and Repeat: Repeat this process every day, ensuring that you always complete the most important tasks first.
Consistency is Key: Consistency helps you to concentrate on a single thing and strengthens your focus and discipline
The Ivy Lee Method is deceptively simple, yet it remains highly relevant and efficient due to its focus on prioritisation and eliminating the irrelevant and insignificant from your daily schedule.
There are other methods also but the focus should be to eliminate multi-tasking and put all your concentration on one thing at a time.
Remember, change is a journey, not a destination. It requires persistence, resilience, and a willingness to adapt and evolve. By focusing on your purpose, cultivating your willpower, and developing your capabilities, you can unlock the power of change and achieve your goals.
In case you missed previous issue on avoiding delusions caused by Ego, here are the key highlights:
Clear Ego to See Clearly: Ego, like dust in the eyes, distorts our perception. Removing ego allows us to view the world more accurately and objectively.
Authenticity Over Deception: The story of the artist and the Angel of Death illustrates that no matter how well one tries to deceive, authenticity is ultimately more powerful and deception is eventually exposed.
Ego Hinders Improvement: Overestimating one’s abilities due to ego prevents personal growth and learning. Humility and accurate self-assessment are crucial for continuous improvement.
Focus on Personal Values: Understanding and focusing on what is genuinely important to oneself, rather than seeking external validation, helps in making meaningful and fulfilling choices.
