Five Life Lessons from my Babuji (Grandfather)
Revisiting his crucial learnings on his 100th Birthday - Issue #89 (9 min read)
On this significant day, the 16th of July, I would like to honor the memory of my beloved grandfather, who was born in the year 1923. Had he been alive today, he would have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years. His presence in my life as both a guru and a teacher has left an indelible mark, shaping the person I have become. His wise words continue to serve as my guiding principles, influencing the choices I make and the path I follow. As we commemorate his centenary birthdate, I would like to share some of the invaluable teachings he imparted to me. These words of wisdom have been a source of inspiration, comfort, and guidance throughout my journey. Sharing five of them with you.
No matter how yesterday went, remember that every new day is a new opportunity. You can't rest on yesterday's accomplishments, and you never have to repeat yesterday's mistakes.
Each day is a new opportunity to make progress towards our goals and create the life we want. It's important to remember that we can't change the past, but we can shape our future by focusing on the present moment.
One key aspect of creating a better life is setting goals. Whether they are short-term or long-term, setting goals can help us stay focused and motivated. It's important to make our goals specific, measurable, and realistic, and to track our progress along the way. By breaking our goals down into smaller, manageable steps, we can avoid feeling overwhelmed and stay on track.
Another important factor in creating a better life is taking action. It's not enough to simply have goals; we need to take consistent action to make them a reality. This can involve making small changes in our daily routine or taking bigger steps outside of our comfort zone.
In addition to setting goals and taking action, it's important to stay focused on the present moment and cultivate a positive mindset. This involves letting go of negative thoughts and emotions from the past, and staying optimistic about the future.
Finally, creating a better life involves contributing to the world around us in a positive way. This can involve volunteering, giving back to our community, or simply being kind and compassionate to others. By making a positive impact on the world, we can create a sense of purpose and fulfillment that goes beyond our own personal goals.
Spend as much time as you can with the people you love. Your spouse, your kids, your parents, your close friends-whoever they are-make sure that you find lots of time to spend with the people you truly care about.
Spending time with the people we love is one of the most important things we can do to create happiness and fulfillment in our lives. Our relationships with our spouse, children, parents, and close friends are the foundation of our support system and can bring us a sense of joy, comfort, and purpose.
One of the main benefits of spending time with our loved ones is that it helps us feel connected. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in our busy schedules and feel isolated. By making time for our loved ones, we can strengthen our bonds and build a sense of community and belonging.
Another benefit of spending time with our loved ones is that it can help us de-stress and relax. When we're with the people we care about, we can let our guard down and be ourselves. We can share our thoughts and feelings, laugh, and enjoy each other's company. This can help us feel more relaxed and happy, and can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of everyday life.
Spending time with our loved ones can also help us create lasting memories. Whether it's a family vacation, a day trip, or simply a meal together, these shared experiences can be some of the most cherished memories of our lives.
In order to make time for our loved ones, it's important to prioritise our relationships. This may involve setting aside time in our busy schedules, being intentional about our interactions, and making an effort to stay connected even when we're apart.
Work hard. You can't always determine what you get out of something, but you can often control what you put into it. His words would be ,”कर्म करो , वही तुम्हारे हाथ में है।”
Working hard is one of the most important things we can do to achieve success in our personal and professional lives. While we can't always control the outcomes of our efforts, we can control the level of effort we put into our work, and this can make all the difference in the world.
When we work hard, we show a commitment to excellence and a willingness to go above and beyond what is expected. This can help us stand out in our careers, earn the respect of our colleagues and superiors, and create opportunities for advancement and growth.
Working hard can also help us develop important skills and knowledge. When we invest time and effort into our work, we can learn new things, develop our talents, and gain valuable experience that can help us achieve our goals.
Another benefit of working hard is that it can give us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. When we set goals and work towards them with determination and focus, we can create a sense of meaning and satisfaction in our lives. This can help us feel fulfilled and happy, and can provide a source of motivation to keep pushing ourselves to achieve even more.
While working hard is important, it's also important to maintain a balance in our lives. We need to make sure we are taking care of ourselves, getting enough rest and relaxation, and spending time with the people we care about. By maintaining this balance, we can avoid burnout and ensure that we are able to continue working hard and achieving our goals in the long run.
Don’t worry. Worrying rarely improves the odds of good things happening, and can actually diminish those odds. He used to say,” करने में सावधान होने में प्रसन्न।”
Worrying is a natural human response to uncertainty and stress, but it's important to recognize that worrying rarely improves the odds of good things happening. In fact, worrying can often make things worse by increasing stress levels, leading to negative thoughts and emotions, and even causing physical symptoms such as headaches and digestive problems.
When we worry, we focus on the worst-case scenarios and what could go wrong. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and fear, which can be paralyzing and prevent us from taking action to improve our situation.
Instead of worrying, it's important to focus on what we can control. We can take steps to prepare for potential challenges and mitigate risks, but we also need to accept that there are some things we can't control.
One way to combat worry is to practice mindfulness and be present in the moment. When we are fully engaged in the present, we can focus on what we are doing and let go of worries about the past or future. This can help us reduce stress and anxiety and improve our overall sense of well-being.
It's also important to seek support from others when we are feeling worried or anxious. Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or professional can help us gain perspective, find solutions to problems, and feel less alone in our struggles.
Share - Share your resources, knowledge and experiences. The more you give the more you will get. His words were,” जो देता है सो पाता है।”
Sharing is an important part of building strong relationships, fostering collaboration, and creating a sense of community. When we share our resources, knowledge, and experiences with others, we not only help them succeed but also create opportunities for ourselves to learn and grow.
Sharing resources can mean anything from lending a helping hand to a friend in need, to donating to a charitable organization, to sharing expertise or equipment with colleagues or peers. By sharing what we have, we can help others achieve their goals and build stronger relationships based on mutual trust and support.
Sharing knowledge is also important because it helps us expand our understanding and learn from others. When we share our expertise and experiences, we not only help others gain new skills and knowledge but also gain insights and perspectives that can help us improve our own work and grow as individuals.
In addition to these benefits, sharing can also have a positive impact on our own well-being and happiness. When we help others and contribute to the greater good, we feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can boost our mood and improve our overall sense of well-being.
